He freed South Africa from apartheid, now he's got a new challenge. He's tackling AIDS all around the world

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was awarded the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his immense contribution to the cause of human rights. He spent years working to create a democratic and just society without racial divisions in South Africa. In 1995 Tutu was chosen by President Nelson Mandela to chair South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and investigate the crimes committed during the apartheid regime. Since 2000 the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre has promoted ethical, visionary and values-based human development. Series: "Voices" [12/2005] [Humanities] [Show ID: 11162]

Paul Desmond - 1924 - 1977. Alto Saxophonist. Born Paul Emil Breitenfeld. Musical genius. Composer of the jazz classic "Take Five". The song is the waltz "Emily" by Johnny Mandell performed at the Monterey Jazz festival in 1975. He played a Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto, a Gregory 4a-18m mouthpiece, and Rico 3-1/2 reeds and is seen here wearing "the suit". He stays fairly close to the lovely melody for the first 32 bars, and then off he goes. The effortlessness with which he spins beautiful melodic improvised lines is depressing (How did he do that?!!). This was the result of genius. He had total command of his instrument, having the ability to play far in to the altissimo register long before it became a studied discipline for the saxophone. And he just stands there, moving little more than his long fingers. No jumping, dancing, swaying, or crouching, just beautiful, swinging music. Note that he is quoting the waltz "Would You" at 2:35. He appears pleased with the result at 2:43.

This is a live video from Desmond Dekker, and this is a famous song from He, and He's band. This is SKA music from the 60's, and 70's. This record can be from 80's, I think.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu rose to prominence in the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. He has spoken out on a number of foreign issues. Speaking to Sir David, he suggests Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General, should mediate the crisis in Zimbabwe. He calls for international intervention and says a peace keeping force should have been sent to Zimbabwe a long time ago.
